La Cova Fumada - Authentic Tapas Delight in Barcelona

We selected several marine dishes: sardines, octopus, squid and bomba (deep fried mashed potatoes). My favourite ones were octopus and sardines. Octopus: extremely tender, juicy and flavourful - a must try. The sauce in which it was submerged elevated the taste so this one was 5/5. Sardines the same, they were so fresh and didn't have the strong taste which I found wonderful. Calamari was great too but imo quite expensive compared to other dishes. Despite widespread online recommendations of bomba we didn't find it special and it was our least favourite tapas of all the dishes. The portions were on the smaller side here so I highly recommend getting a tomato toast to top up your calorie intake and keep you fuller. It's quite pricey given how small the portions were - yet they were authentic. To sum up, it's a great local experience. We needed to queue for about 30 minutes before being seated. You can choose to stand to possibly reduce the waiting time. The bill amounted to about €28. The staff was efficient. The place is packed and didn't have much personal space and was so loud but it was expected given how busy it is during lunchtime.

This is the highest 5 stars I can give. I’ve given a lot of 5-star reviews, but this one is different. La Cova Fumada is the kind of place I imagine Anthony Bourdain would take Obama — no flash, no gimmicks, just honest, perfect food in a room that feels frozen in time. Hands down the best tapas I’ve ever had, and probably ever will have. The bomba alone is worth the trip — crispy, rich, spicy, unforgettable. Every dish felt simple but flawless. It’s not glamorous, and that’s exactly the point. The worn walls, the tight space, the energy — it all adds to the experience. This isn’t a restaurant trying to impress you. It just quietly delivers something special. If you’re in Barcelona and care about food, this is it.

We absolutely loved this eatery. Frequented by locals and checked out by intrepid tourists like ourselves. The vibe was welcoming and the food!!!! OMG IT WAS SO GOOD!! The squid, baby mussels are so well done!! So were the sardines and langostines. It was well worth the trip.
